Convoy offers hope, footwear to hundreds

Enough shoes for about 5,000 feet were free for the taking this weekend at Harry Grove Stadium. 

On Saturday, under the shade of a tent, volunteers were helping hundreds of people determine their shoe size and pick out their new pair of footwear. A few steps away, musicians played for the crowd, and volunteers distributed bags full of groceries. 

It was the second time this year that the Convoy of Hope has rolled through Frederick County, bringing together local churches, nonprofits and government groups to provide free services to the community's needy. 

So many donations remained after the first event at the Frederick Fairgrounds in June that organizers decided to host another one, said Sharon Blache, co-coordinator for Convoy. 

The goal of the event was to make sure the guests know "someone understands and loves me because of who I am," Blache said. 

Though the Convoy only lasts for a few hours, the shoes and the groceries can act as a morale boost for struggling families, she said. In addition, the event connects guests with community services they might not have known about.

A single mother of five children, Brown said times have been tough for about a year since she was laid off from her government job. 

She said because of the difficult job market, many people are in the same boat, but Convoy provides some much-needed encouragement. 

"Every little bit helps," she said. 

Blache said Convoy was handing out about 2,500 pairs of shoes. Most of them were for children, but work boots and other footwear in adult sizes were also available, she said. In addition, about 85 pallets of food were delivered to the event, she said.
