A NEWLY positioned CCTV camera is helping the fight against crime in Melton town centre.

The camera in Sherrard Street is another link in the chain for Melton, with 16 cameras now providing coverage mainly of the town centre.

The camera, enhancing coverage of the Sherrard Street area, has been funded by the Safer Melton Partnership - a joint agency involving Melton Council, Melton Police and other partners.

All 16 cameras are monitored by a team of trained volunteers at Melton Police Station who can quickly alert officers to incidents as well as using the camera’s pan, tilt and zoom functions to gather evidence.

It covers lots of businesses on these roads. Research went into the camera’s best location and it doesn’t cover any residential dwellings.”

CCTV co-ordinator Roger Petchey said: “The idea with positioning is to look at the linkage between one camera and another to give us continuity of coverage which is crucial from an evidential point of view.”

Harrinder Rai, Melton Council’s head of communities and neighbourhoods, added: “This is one of a range of projects the Safer Melton Partnership is developing to tackle offending and reduce the fear of crime and fits in with our priority of making Melton a town where people feel safe.”

Tina Panayi, manager of The Wise Plaice, said: “If it provides extra security it has to be good, as long as it doesn’t mean we’ll have less officers around because the camera is there.”

l Melton Police hope to recruit more volunteers to help monitor the town’s CCTV network. Volunteers will receive training in numerous areas including how to operate the equipment, evidence gathering and radio communication.Any one know where to get Nomex cloth by the yard?I can get scraps out of the trash at work but for the Bruiser project I need a few yards of the stuff, prefferably not sage green.
